A shocking new report says the number of homeless elementary school students could soon be as high as 1 in 7.

The New York Times published findings from the Institute for Children, Poverty, and Homelessness.

It says more than 140,000 grade school kids in the city have been homeless at some point in the past 6 years.

Homeless students are much more likely to change schools mid-year, fall behind a grade, and be suspended or drop out.

The report blames rising rents along with falling state and federal assistance for putting more families into shelters and other temporary housing.

It also says the city has been successful in its campaign to enroll homeless students in the universal Pre-K program.
