Some city kids really stepped up to the plate Friday in East Harlem.

Elementary and middle school students have been practicing all summer for baseball and softball championships today on 101st Street and Second Avenue.

Friday's games were put on by Dream, the organization formerly know as Harlem RBI.

The group's goal is to help kids here in the city and New Jersey realize their potential through sports.

"We happen to think that teamwork, the ability to get along and work with others, is one of the most important skills anyone could have. We also think baseball's a great teaching sport because it's about failure. If you fail seven out of 10 times in this game, you're wildly successful. That teaches grit, that teaches resiliency and those are the sort of skills our kids need to grow up healthy and strong," said Dream Executive Director Richard Berlin.

More than 2,000 boys and girls participate in the program every year.
