The medical examiner has ruled that Judge Sheila Abdus-Salaam's death was a suicide.

The cause of Abdus-Salaam's death was drowning, according to the medical examiner.

Abdus-Salaam was the first African-American woman to serve on the Court of Appeals, the state's highest court.

She was found dead in the Hudson River near West 131st Street on April 12 after being reported missing a day earlier.
