The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says one New York City resident has died as part of a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to yellow Maradol papayas.

The CDC says 47 people have been infected with the Salmonella Kiambu strain in 12 states, including 12 in New York.

CDC officials said people became sick in mid-May, five of whom were in Maryland.

The yellow Maradol papayas are a likely source of the outbreak, the CDC said. They said tests from the Maryland Department of Health said a strain of Salmonella Kiambu found in some of the ill people is closely related to a strain found in papayas at a grocery store connected to the illness.

The agency has advised people not to eat the yellow Maradol papayas until more information is available, and to throw out any you may have in your home.

Those who became ill in the outbreak range in age from less than a year old to 95.

City officials said they are working with the CDC.
