The NYPD had a new police commissioner but just for the day.

Teenager Jenna Fiordimondo was sworn in as part of the Police Athletic League’s "Police Commissioner for a Day" contest and shadowed Police Commissioner James O’Neill as he went about his duties.

More than 130 others filled in as deputy commissioners and precinct captains throughout the five boroughs.

The students were chosen through an essay contest. They had to write about tackling drug use among the city’s youth.

"I would raise awareness in schools through group meetings and peer groups and assemblies where special guests would visit, talking about the dangers of abuse," said Fiordimondo.

"My essay was based on the topic of trying to get the police involved to help get rid of these problems inside the school system and communities,” said another person at the ceremony.

The NYPD says it hopes the program will inspire the next generation of officers.
