Queens Council on the Arts Receives Donation to Help Local Artists

Artists who don't always get their work noticed could soon have their moment in the spotlight.

The Scherman Foundation is giving the Queens Council on the Arts $300,000 over the next three years to help local artists.

In its first year, each artist will receive 10 thousand dollars to produce a piece of music, theater or dance.

People who are interested will be given the opportunity to further sponsor the artists.

Officials from the foundation and the council say the grant will help artists represent diversity in the borough.

"The people who live in these areas and the artists who work in these genres and who are really tied to the cultures of these communities will have an opportunity to step up, " said Queens Council on the Arts Executive Director Hoong Yee Lee Krakauer.
