NEW YORK - New York Knicks president Phil Jackson is leaving the team.

Team officials made the announcement official Wednesday morning.

In a statement, MSG Executive Chairman Jim Dolan said in part, "After careful thought and consideration, we mutually agreed that the Knicks will be going in a different direction."

He went on to say, "Phil Jackson is one of the most celebrated and successful individuals in the history of the NBA. His legacy in the game of basketball is unmatched. We wish him the best and thank him for his service to the Knicks as both a player and an executive."

Jackson's relationship with Dolan soured recently over Jackson's belief that the Knicks should part ways with Carmelo Anthony.

The 71-year-old Jackson was in the third year of a five-year contract with the Knicks, who have won 80 games and lost 166 during his tenure.

Jackson is a former Knick who won two world titles playing in New York.

He is also the most successful coach in NBA history, with 11 championships between the Bulls and the Lakers.
