The state is now investigating a Queens landlord who demanded tenants prove their immigration status or risk eviction.

Residents of a building on 42nd Avenue and Junction Boulevard in Corona say their landlord posted these signs, asking tenants who are renewing their lease for proof of their immigration status.

The letter then says if the residents fail to comply, management may have to terminate the lease and evict them.

State Senator Jose Peralta, who filed a complaint with the Attorney General's Office, says the practice violates human rights laws.

"New York City is a sanctuary city and immigrants are in fear," Peralta said. "So why go after these individuals and ask them for their immigration status to renew their lease, when in reality, all they have to provide is a photo ID or an employment letter that proves who that individual is."

Governor Andrew Cuomo says he is also launching a new statewide campaign to educate landlords and tenants about their rights and responsibilities.
