NEW YORK - Dozens gathered on the steps of City Hall Monday to pay tribute to the victims of last year's deadly nightclub shooting in Orlando.

Forty-nine people died and dozens were injured when gunman Omar Mateen opened fire in the gay nightclub Pulse.

People at the memorial read the name of all the victims.

Organizers say its important to turn diversity into something that can be celebrated and valued in society.

"Say no to hate, no to homophobia, no to transphobia, and educate more people to embrace diversity," said another attendee.

A memorial service was also held at the site of the Orlando shooting overnight.

The nightclub is still closed and there are plans to turn it into a memorial.
