A bicyclist was killed in a traffic crash while riding a Citi Bike, making him the first fatality in the city's bike-sharing program.

Police say 36-year-old Dan Hanegby was riding on West 26th Street between Seventh and Eighth avenues around 8:15 p.m. Monday.

They say he collided with a charter bus and fell to the ground. That's when they say he was run over by the bus's back tires.

Police say Hanegby suffered severe trauma to his body and died at the hospital.

The 52-year-old driver of the charter bus stayed on the scene.

Citi Bike expressed condolences to Hanegby's family in a statement, and says they'll work to make sure their riders are practicing safe bicycling.
