NEW YORK - Long Island Rail Road riders heading into the city experienced some major delays Tuesday morning.

The MTA says Amtrak had a third rail power problem inside one of the East River tunnels, causing two LIRR trains to become disabled.

One of the trains was carrying 1,000 passengers and was stuck in the tunnel for 75 minutes.

The agency says the train left from Massapequa Park at around 6:15 a.m. and was due to arrive at Penn Station a little after 7 a.m.

A relief engine was sent to help remove both trains.

"It's annoying but that being said there's worse things that could happen. I woke up this morning so I'm blessed. Highly blessed but highly annoyed," noted one optimistic commuter at Penn Station.

"I was coming from New Hyde Park today. I usually come from Babylon, but it doesn't matter. Wherever you come from you're going to be delayed," said another LIRR rider.

Trains headed into Penn Station were delayed about 30 minutes, while others were canceled at Jamaica Station or diverted to Hunterspoint Avenue or Atlantic Terminal.

The MTA says it cross-honored LIRR tickets on the E, 7, 2 and 3 trains.
