Police are still searching for the driver they say hit a young girl Brooklyn and then sped away.

It happened just after 5:30 Saturday at the intersection of East 31st Street near Kings Highway in Marine Park.

Police say a red car hit the 8-year-old mid-block and then drove off.

She was taken to the hospital with head trauma, but is expected to recover.

People who live in the neighborhood say a lot of children live in the area, and speeding cars have always been a problem.

"Because this block specifically has this many children, and of course we try to make sure our children don't run out into the street, but specifically when the cars turn down off of Kings Highway, they're often going at a higher speed," said one neighbor. "If they don't see any people coming they just race down the block, sometimes going 40, 50 miles an hour."

Residents say they plan on speaking with their local officials to get speed bumps installed.
