A small plane crashed on its approach to Teterboro Airport in New Jersey on Monday afternoon, officials said, killing two crew members.

The Port Authority says the Learjet crashed around 3:30 p.m. on Kero Road and Commerce Road in Carlstadt, New Jersey, about a half mile away from the airport, on its approach to the runway.

Smoke from the crash could be seen from Manhattan.

Town spokesman Joe Orlando said the plane crashed into a building in an industrial area.

Emergency responders reached the scene a short time later and were working to extinguish the blaze.

Carlstadt Police said the two crew members were the only people aboard the plane.

Authorities said everyone on the ground is accounted for and not injured.

The flight left for Teterboro from Philadelphia International Airport, officials said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

A Carlstadt police spokesman said that the plane appeared to be listing to its side before it went down.

The National Weather Service warned of strong winds minutes before it happened.

Teterboro Airport is open to departing flights but not incoming ones.
