Dozens of people with developmental disabilities took on The Spartan Race Saturday at Citi Field.

The traveling obstacle course tests endurance and strength of athletes around the country.

For the Special Spartans race, participants climbed over spider webs, balance beams and more, all with the help of special assistants.

Officials hope the race helps competitors learn about athletes of all abilities.

"Children, who are with challenges are probably in a place to teach a lot of Spartans a lesson to begin with," said Daniel Goldstein, the director of The Special Spartans Program.

"We're able to create awareness for autism and Autism Speaks, which will lead to better understanding and acceptance of autism spectrum disorders,” said Brandon Wilmoth, the National Director of the Team Up Program for Autism Speaks.

Each of the participants got a Spartan medal. Competitors also had a chance to raise money for Autism Speaks.
