Several city lawmakers blast President Trump's firing of FBI director James Comey.
Five Democratic leaders spoke out at Foley Square in Lower Manhattan around 11 a.m.
They called Trump's reasoning for letting go of Comey nothing but a lie.
Instead, they claim Comey was fired for investigating the Trump administration's connection with Russia.
As a result, they are demanding an independent prosecutor lead the Russia probe.
"The White House claims that the president fired James Comey because of how poorly the FBI director treated Hillary Clinton," said Congressman Hakeem Jeffries. "Are you kidding me? That is absurd. That is insane. That is an outright lie."
Jeffries also suggested that high crimes and treason may have been committed, which would be grounds for impeaching President Trump.
