Crown Heights residents on Thursday took part in a heated town hall meeting on a proposed transitional shelter.

Officials say the building would offer transitional housing to 132 homeless families, most of whom come from Crown Heights and the surrounding areas.

It's part of the mayor's broader plan to open 90 shelters across the city, including five in Crown Heights.

But residents say their neighborhood is already doing its fair share to help the homeless.

"You don't just put a homeless shelter in a community without engaging the people that live there and let them know what you plan to do for them," said one person who attended the meeting.

"We don't see why that should be a homeless shelter. It should be low-income housing, not affordable housing. There's a big difference," said another.

The meeting comes more than a week after a judge temporarily blocked a different shelter from opening in Crown Heights.
