The family of a Queens woman killed while jogging last summer spoke out Tuesday as the man charged in her death appeared in court, pleading not guilty on all charges. NY1's Shannan Ferry filed the following report.

It was a difficult day in court for the family of Karina Vetrano, the Queens woman beaten to death as she jogged in Howard Beach last summer.

They sat stoically as prosecutors read aloud statements 20-year-old Chanel Lewis allegedly made to police, confessing to Vetrano’s murder.

"He's as guilty as guilty can be, and the evidence will prove that," said Phil Vetrano, Katrina's father.

According to the account read in court, Lewis told police he was angry at someone in his Brooklyn neighborhood, walked off into Spring Creek Park and "just lost it" when he encountered Vetrano jogging.

"I was just mad at that time. I beat her to let my emotions out. I never meant to hurt her. It just happened," prosecutors said, quoting his alleged confession.

According to the account, Lewis said he fought with Vetrano for five minutes, punching her five times, breaking her teeth, strangling her and knocking her out. Lewis allegedly confessed that Vetrano's head fell into a puddle and when she stopped moving, "I pulled her into the weeds."

"He didn't say that. The prosecutor is the one that make up all these lies," said Veta Lewis, Chanel Lewis' mother.

Lewis' mother attended the hearing and maintains her son is being framed. She says he's God-fearing and nonviolent. He pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of murder and sexual abuse.

"He's loving and he's kind. He's a wonderful, wonderful son," Veta Lewis said.

But Vetrano's father says there's no question Lewis killed his daughter. He spoke exclusively with NY1 after the hearing.

"They can say an alien came down from space and did it, but that doesn't make it true," Paul Vetrano said.

Vetrano's murder on August second triggered a massive investigation. Lewis was arrested in February. Officials said his DNA had been found under her fingernails.

Prosecutors say Lewis has expressed remorse. He also allegedly told a detective, "Tell my mom that I'm sorry."

Lewis is due back in court on July 13. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison without the possibility the of parole.
