An elderly couple was found dead in their home — apparently the victims of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Firefighters responded to a 911 call about gas inside a fifth floor apartment on First Avenue near 101st Street.

When they arrived, their carbon monoxide detectors immediately went off.

The victims were found in a bedroom.

Emergency responders say the oven was left on overnight.

"They shut the stove, and vented the building, and the CO's went down to acceptable levels all around in the building," said FDNY Deputy Chief James Coyne.

Friends of the elderly couple tell us they were active in their church.

The investigation is still ongoing.
