GOUVERNEUR, N.Y. -- A new proposed bill would eliminate certain portions of the SAFE Act throughout the state except in New York City.

Some of the things it would do is change the definition of an assault weapon and get rid of the requirement that gun owners need to recertify pistols.

Assemblyman Marc Butler, who introduced the bill, is trying to rally support. Tuesday, he held a meeting in Gouverneur for residents and local gun owners to learn more about the legislation. Many supporters say the changes make sense, saying there's a different culture surrounding guns in Upstate New York.
