A Bay Terrace man is throwing his hat into the ring for the South Shore city council seat.

Democrat Dylan Schwartz intends to challenge Republican City Councilman Joe Borelli in this year's general election.

"We are talking about the opioid epidemic, we are talking about the lack of infrastructure and resources at our local hospitals," Schwartz said. "We are talking about the children in our community who have Autism, and the breast cancer rates on Staten Island that are sky-high."

The 25-year-old native Staten Islander filed campaign papers with the state board of elections last month.

Schwartz says he will focus on tackling issues like education, transportation, and, most importantly, access to healthcare.

Schwartz's candidacy marks the first time Borelli will face opposition since he was elected to the seat in 2015.

Since then, Borelli says he has made big strides in improving schools on the South Shore.

He says he has also led the way on several improvement projects for areas like Crescent Beach Park and the former Brookfield landfill.

When it comes to campaigning, he says his track record speaks for itself.

"I know every back street in my district like the back of my hand," Borelli said. "I have a great base of support of friends and allies and community leaders who will be supporting me, and that's it — we're gonna put our record against anyone else's."

Borelli and Schwartz will clash for the 51st District seat on Nov. 7.
