Without hesitation, NY1's latest Queens People of the Week hopped on a plane to travel thousands of miles, all to help children in need. NY1's Leisha Majtan introduces us.

Giving back is a way of life for Samantha and Anthony Viscovich.

Over the years, the brother and sister from Whitestone have gone on many volunteer trips helping communities in need.

But there's one they keep going back to: Villa la Paz -- a home for sick and orphaned children in Peru.

"At first you're a little bit shocked because some of them are burn victims, some of them, they can't walk, so at first it's like oh my gosh, it's crazy because I've never seen anything like that before," said 24-year-old Samantha Viscovich, NY1's Queens Person of the Week.

The duo travelled to the home earlier this month.

During their week-long stay, they helped take care of more than 30 children, some just newborns.

They prepared meals, brought the kids to doctors, and even played their favorite sport -- soccer.

"You kind of forget that they're dealing with these really heartbreaking illnesses and these surgeries and operations they're going through because they're so happy with what they have, despite everything," said Samantha Viscovich.

This was Anthony's third volunteer trip to Peru.

After his first visit, he knew he had to go back.

"It was very upsetting coming back because you want to do so much more for them. And you want to stay there and help them out," said 19-year-old Anthony Viscovich, NY1's Queens Person of the Week

And so this time around Samantha and Anthony launched a GoFundMe to do just that.

They raised more than $2,000.

The proceeds went toward buying new strollers, wheelchairs, and medical costs.

And out of their own pocket, the Viscovich family bought board games, MP3 players, and toys for the kids.

"They're all happy. They play soccer with the new balls, they love to color. They're doing all this stuff and it gets me excited. I love joining in with them," said Anthony.

Samantha and Anthony plan to go back this summer.

They say the kids at Villa La Paz are an inspiration.

"If you can go through something like this, and still be happy, and still function as a human being, I am completely blessed," said Samantha Viscovich.

And so for extending a helping hand across the globe, Samantha and Anthony Viscovich are our Queens People of the Week.

The Viscovich family is still collecting money for their next trip to Villa la Paz. For more information, visit gofundme.com/forthechildrenofelhogar.
