First African-American Queens Borough President Laid to Rest Saturday
The funeral for former Queens Borough President Helen Marshall was held in East Elmhurst Saturday.
The service took place at the First Baptist Church on Astoria Boulevard near 100th street.
Marshall died March 4 in California.
She was born in the Bronx and was a teacher before entering politics, serving in the State Assembly and City Council for several terms each.
Marshall was the first African-American Queens Borough President, holding the office from 2002 to 2013.
She was 87 years old.
