The community pays respect to former Borough President Helen Marshall.

Visiting hours were open to the public at Cobbs Funeral Chapel in East Elmhurst Friday.

Marshall died last weekend in California.

She was the first African-American Queens Borough President and served from 2002 to 2013.

Friends and local leaders say she was a devoted public servant.

"She genuinely cared about people and issues too. But she was warm, friendly," said State Senator Toby Ann Stavisky.

"Whatever she did in her public life, she spread love and good feelings," said Vicki Schneps, of Schneps Communications.

"She was very well loved and liked. Yes, and I'm going to miss her a lot," said Pat Thorpe, the vice president of the 115th Precinct Community Council.

Helen Marshall was 87 years old.
