An EMT is dead and another is in critical condition after a man hit them with a stolen ambulance in the Bronx on Thursday night, the NYPD said.
The NYPD said the FDNY EMTs were run over around 7:08 p.m. at the intersection of White Plains Road and Watson Ave.
The injured EMT was taken to Jacobi Hospital in critical condition.
An off-duty MTA officer and a few Good Samaritans helped subdue the 25-year-old suspect before he was arrested, according to officials.
Yadira Arroyo of Station 26, who the suspect fatally struck with the ambulance, was a 14-year veteran of the city fire department and the mother of five children, according to Mayor Bill de Blasio.
According to officials, the EMTs were responding to a 911 call when a passing motorist told them that a man was riding on the back bumper of their ambulance.
When Arroyo stopped the ambulance and went around it to confront the man, he got around her and entered the driver's seat.
The NYPD said the EMT in the passenger's seat struggled with him, getting injured.
Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said the man put the ambulance in reverse, hit one EMT, and ran over Arroyo.
The ambulance soon after crashed into a car and got stuck in a snowbank.
The suspect's name has not been released yet.
The investigation is ongoing.
