The Javits Center is set to get a makeover and expansion.

Governor Andrew Cuomo broke ground on the $1.5 billion project at 38th Street and 11th Avenue on the West Side.

He says the Javits Center will grow by 50 percent. That’s more than 1 million square feet of exhibit and meeting space.

Cuomo says the project is part of a greater redevelopment plan that will make Javits a state-of-the-art convention center.

"It does economic development, and it does jobs. And that’s what it’s about," Cuomo said. "It’s about the 3,000 construction jobs. It’s about the $400 million in economic activity that will increase because of this expansion. And it’s about the larger vision that we have for our new New York.”

The expansion will include a roof terrace and pavilion, meeting rooms, a ballroom, and dozens of new loading docks.

It’s expected to be completed by 2021.
