The NYPD says a doorman died after falling while shoveling snow on the Upper East Side on Thursday morning.

"He had respect for everybody. All he gave was love," said relative Elena Gonzalez. "He would always hug us, kiss us on our forehead, like if he was our dad."

It happened outside a building on East 93rd Street around 9:30 a.m.

The victim has been identified by police as 59-year-old Miguel Gonzalez of Bridgeport, Connecticut.

NYPD Chief of Patrol Terence Monahan says Gonzalez slipped and fell through a glass window.

The doorman died from his injuries.

"He seemed like an extremely nice person," one neighbor said. "He normally said 'Hi' as I walked by and stuff like that — just friendly, in general."

Gonzalez was a member of the union 32BJ SEIU. The union says he worked at the building for many years.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and children and all those who knew and cared about him, including his coworkers and the residents of his building," 32BJ SEIU President Hector Figueroa said in a statement. "Our union family will do all we can to support Miguel’s family in this difficult time."
