State and federal authorities are suing a company they say scammed September 11th first responders struggling with cancer and respiratory illnesses.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau say RD Legal Funding lured them into costly advances on their settlements.

The New Jersey-based company allegedly told responders they could cut through red tape to get them their money faster, even though they had no legal ability to do so.

The company is also accused of pulling the same scam on NFL players receiving payouts for concussion-related injuries.

A lawyer for RD Legal had no immediate comment.
