NEW YORK - A federal judge in Brooklyn has extended the emergency order that bars the government from deporting people who arrive here from countries covered by President Donald Trump's travel restrictions.

A different judge initially ordered the temporary stay last Saturday, one day after Trump signed his executive order.

Thursday night's ruling extends the stay until February 21 to give the government and civil liberties groups more time to file papers in the legal fight over the order.

The president's action led to massive protests at airports across the country last weekend, including JFK Airport.

It temporarily bars immigrants from seven Muslim countries from entering the U.S.

The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a class-action lawsuit challenging the travel restrictions.

The Justice Department says it plans to ask a judge to throw out the case.

New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman joined the ACLU lawsuit Thursday.

In a statement, he called the travel ban "unconstitutional and fundamentally un-American" and said it discriminates against Muslims.
