Several protesters were arrested Thursday afternoon outside of a federal detention center as they took a stand against President Donald Trump's immigration policies.

"We don't want our people to be detained. We don't want our people to be in chains. We don't want our people treated inhumanely," said Luba Cortes, a youth organizer of advocacy group Make the Road New York.

Protesters came together outside of the federal facility in Elizabeth, New Jersey where several undocumented immigrants arrested in New York by federal immigration agents this month are being held.

At least four protesters were arrested after they refused police orders to get off the road.

The activists say they they think Trump's crackdown is misguided.

"There's a big difference between words and actions," said Andres Mejer, an immigration attorney. "Trump says he wants to focus on the criminals. The reality, he's picking up lots and lots of people who are not criminals.

"In an effort to keep out bad people, we are separating families, and we are tearing apart the fabric of our community," said Nedia Morsy, a youth organizer with Make the Road New Jersey.

Demonstrators say they plan to keep up with their efforts to educate immigrants about their rights in case they end up facing deportation.
