NEW YORK - Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday named David Hansell as the new head of the Administration for Children's Services.

It's a story first reported on NY1

Hansell previously worked at consulting firm KPMG, but specializes in government and public sector human and social Services.

He's spent time as the acting assistant secretary for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the commissioner for the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance.

The ACS has been under fire for failing to follow proper procedures leading up to the deaths of several young boys in recent months.

The incidents led to the resignation of former commissioner Gladys Carrion.

Hansell says he is ready to work with the mayor, and that evaluating the agency is at the top of his to-do list.

"I share his mission to protect every child, and his deep appreciation for the difficult and challenging work that the women and men do at ACS everyday. First, I will do a top-to-bottom review of ACS's protective and preventive functions to strengthen what's working, and to change what isn't," Hansell said.

Hansell will lead the agency at a time of intense scrutiny.

The state appointed an independent monitor to report findings and make recommendations as the city looks to overhaul the agency.
