Several people were arrested Saturday after an immigration rally got heated in Lower Manhattan.

Hundreds of people rallied at Washington Square Park, calling on police to stop arresting undocumented immigrants for low-level crimes that may get them deported.

Violence broke out at one point during the rally, leading police to arrest five people.

Advocates say "broken windows" policing puts immigrants at risk.

"We're calling on the mayor and city council to take action, to put action behind their words,” said an organizer. “They say NYC is a sanctuary city, but it can't be a sanctuary city if we still have broken windows policing."

"A lot of people are getting low-level offenses like hopping the turnstile, and now they're on the pipeline for deportation,” said Albert Saint Jean, NYC Organizer for the Black Alliance for Just Immigration.
