Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is calling on the incoming Trump administration to help victims of domestic violence.

The federal Housing Department does not currently count people forced from their homes because of domestic violence as being homeless.

Gillibrand says the omission has a huge impact on policies and resources.

"We need to fix this oversight by HUD and make sure their funding is being allocated in the best way possible so that homeless New Yorkers, including those who are victims of domestic violence, can get the help that they need and get their lives back on track," Gillibrand said. "We all have a responsibility to help those who are most vulnerable among us. And no New Yorker deserves to be homeless."

Advocates hope adding domestic violence victims to the count leads to more federal housing money.
