It’s the rise of the robots, at this year’s NYC FIRST Robotics Competition.

The machines will take over Columbia University and LIU-Brooklyn today, where more than 1,300 local high school students are kicking off the 17th annual competition.

FIRST, which stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, is an international contest that has teams of 10 students that spend several weeks building robots.

This year’s theme is 'steamworks.'

Organizers say the program promotes science and technology and prepares students for a modern tech-based workplace.

Students will get to show off their robotic creations at the official city competition and expo in April.
