The NYPD says a 63-year-old man brandishing a knife was shot and killed in his home by a police officer in Canarsie Tuesday night.

At press conference early Wednesday morning Assistant Chief Steven M. Powers, the NYPD's commanding officer for Brooklyn South, described the man as emotionally disturbed.

Powers said officers responded to the home where James Owens lived at around 9:30 p.m.

Police say when they arrived at the home on East 99th Street Owens emerged from a back room with a 13-inch kitchen knife. One officer attempted to use a Taser on him. But police say it had no effect, and he continued to advance, still holding the blade.

That's when investigators say a second officer fired three shots, each striking Owens in the chest.

Investigators say Owens was taken to Brookdale Hospital where he was pronounced dead. No officers were injured in the incident.
