Some volunteers in the borough are recognized for helping local kids realize their potential. Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City honored their "Queens Male and Female Matches of the Year" Thursday at Astoria Bowl.

The organization pairs at-risk youth with adult mentors. This year's award recipients were Big Brother Jerry Kokkinos and Little Brother Daniel -- and Big Sister Eunice Cuevas and Little Sister Guadalupe.

"It gives our organization an opportunity to recognize and highlight the accomplishments of the organization but really more importantly, it gives us the opportunity for us to celebrate our unsung heroes,” says Hector Batista, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City.

"It feels very special. We've been together for three and a half years and we've had so much fun together. And it just feels like just icing on the cake,” says Eunice Cuevas, the Queens Female Match of the Year, as she stood with Guadalupe.

January is National Mentoring Month.
