The sports world is mourning the deaths of two pro baseball players killed in separate car crashes over the weekend in the Dominican Republic.

Fans in Kansas City have been leaving flowers and other momentos at Kauffman Stadium for 25-year-old Yordano Ventura, a right-handed pitcher for the Royals.

Ventura was killed in a car crash on a highway in the Caribbean nation.

It's not clear if he was driving.

Ventura helped the Royals reach the World Series in 2014 and ultimately win a title against the Mets the following year.

Former major leaguer Andy Marte died in an unrelated car accident about 100 miles north of the Dominican Republic capital.

The 33-year-old last played with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2014, and his last major league at bat came against the Royals in a game that Ventura started.

Both men were natives of the Dominican Republic.
