CHICAGO — On Monday morning, President Obama announced that he will give his farewell speech on Jan. 10 from his hometown Chicago.

"I'm thinking about them as a chance to say thank you for this amazing journey, to celebrate the ways you've changed this country for the better these past eight years, and to offer some thoughts on where we all go from here," his statement says.

He said he’s following in the footsteps of George Washington who penned the first farewell address to the American people.

While he says he's only just begun writing, he plans to use the speech as "a chance to say thank you for this amazing journey, to celebrate the ways you've changed this country for the better these past eight years, and to offer some thoughts on where we all go from here."

Obama is requesting stories reflecting moments of inspiration from the American people. The White House indicates that stories can also be shared on Twitter via the hashtag #YesWeCan.

"So I hope you'll join me one last time,” the statement says. “Because, for me, it's always been about you.”
