A Brooklyn police commander is apologizing after some controversial comments about rape.

Captain Peter Rose heads the 94th precinct in Greenpoint.

He downplayed date rape at a community meeting last week when he said that "true stranger rapes" are more troubling than others.

Rose's apology came on Twitter, where he said in part, "My comments were not meant to minimize the seriousness of sexual assault. Every rape, whether it is perpetrated by a stranger or someone known to them, is fully investigated. We make no distinction in our response. My comments suggested otherwise."

Women's rights activists were expected to protest Rose's comments Tuesday in front of the precinct stationhouse.
