A local non-profit holds a daylong event for expectant moms living in homeless shelters.

The group "Women in Need" or WIN is the largest homeless shelter provider in the city.

Its CEO is former City Council Speaker Christine Quinn.

There were several activities for moms-to-be including demonstrations on crib safety and a health and wellness panel.

Participants say they're grateful for the program.

"It's very useful," said one.

"Not too much people have enough money that has — could go buy stuff for the unborn baby, so I think it could help a lot," said another.

"It's very, very expensive having a baby and when you're in a shelter it becomes that much more of a burden so much than a joyful event, so everything from the expense of maternity clothes to pampers and diapers and wipes and baby carriers, you know these moms struggle already," said Pamela Brasier, program director with WIN East River. "This event is to alleviate some of that burden."

WIN has ten homeless shelters across the city and houses more than 1,200 families every night.
