NEW YORK - Officials are vowing to make the city one of the safest places in the world on New Year's Eve.

Officials say counterterrorism teams and K-9 units will be among the 7,000 officers on duty.

Officers with heavy weapons will also be walking about, while others will patrol the city by air and water.

And for the first time, 65 sanitation trucks filled with sand will sit around Times Square to protect against vehicle attacks.

Officials say there haven't been any specific threats to Times Square like those in Nice or Berlin, but they aren't taking any chances.

"You will see extraordinary assets deployed by the NYPD," said Mayor Bill de Blasio. "You will see a lot of men and women in uniform, including members of our critical response command, our strategic political response group, our emergency services unit. A lot you will see, and as per usual, a lot you will not see. And that's that combination that keeps us safe."

Partyers in Times Square will be screened by security. Umbrellas and large bags will be forbidden.
