Russia's ambassador to Turkey was assassinated while speaking at an embassy-sponsored event in the country's capital of Ankara Monday.

The U.N. has condemned the shooting.

An Associated Press photographer says this man fired eight shots at Ambassador Andrei Karlov while speaking at a photo exhibit.

After the shooting, the gunman shouted "Don't forget Aleppo."

According to Turkish media, the gunman was shot and killed by police.

The attack comes a day before Iranian, Russian, and Turkish officials were set to meet in Moscow to discuss Syria.

Karlov was Russia's ambassador to Pyongyang before working as a chief of the Foreign Ministry's consular department.

He became an ambassador to Turkey in 2013.

Karlov was 62-years-old.
