The city's first real blast of winter weather has arrived, with dangerous wind gusts of around 50 mph dipping wind chills to around 10 degrees.

The polar vortex visiting the city will leave us with a high of 27 degrees Friday, although the high winds are expected to ease by mid-day.

The wind will cause airport delays, and could mean construction site and scaffolding issues, downed trees and branches, and power outages.

The coldest air of the season will give way to a warm-up this weekend, although it will also be wet.

Saturday, snowfall of possibly 1 to 2 inches is expected to turn into rain in the morning, with a high of 46 degrees.

But temperatures are projected to soar into the 50s by Sunday afternoon.

Not everyone was intimidated by the cold Friday, as some runners in Brooklyn got in a workout despite the freezing temperatures.

Runner: We're going to do a loop of the park

NY1: First of all, you have icicles on your beard.

Runner: Do I? Yeah, they'll be in full form by the end.

"You bundle up, and it's not so bad….the wind is bad, yeah," said another runner. "The jacket is key, and the face cover."

Next week, the city is expected to face dry conditions with highs in the 30s and 40s.

Readings have been below freezing since 4 a.m. Thursday. The cold and wind helped set off snow showers Friday, and parts of the city got a quick dusting.
