Union leaders are renewing calls for better safety standards at construction sites, after a worker fell to his death in Brooklyn.

59-year-old Wilfredo Enriques fell several stories yesterday morning while he was installing glass at the site of the former Domino Sugar Factory in Williamsburg. His safety harness was apparently not attached to the scaffolding.

District Council 9, which represents union workers, is pressing the city to pass safety legislation and improve oversight of all city-funded projects.

"We're looking to see safety legislation requiring developments that get public subsidies or not require that their workers get trained," said Davon Lomax, a representative of District Council 9. "And they learn how to be safe on the job."

PG Products, the company that Enriques worked for, is now under investigation regarding its own safety standards.

Officials say the company is cooperating with the Department of Buildings.

A vigil for Enriques will take place later tonight at the construction site.
