Elected officials are calling for an end to the use of some heating oils at local Queens power plant.

City Council member Costa Constantinides and his colleagues voiced their concerns Friday outside the Ravenswood Generating Station in Long Island City.

They say their districts in Queens have more emergency room visits and cases of asthma because of the plant's emissions.

Constantinides introduced a law last year that forces generating stations to eliminate the use of fuel number 6 by 2020 and fuel number 4 by 2030.

Officials said those two fuels are the dirtiest types of heating oils.

"They did not come to the hearing that we held on Nov. 28 to show us their plan on how they plan on getting there," Constantinides said outside the plant. "Last year alone, this plant behind us burned 3 million gallons of number 6 oil, so it does not look like they are on any path to cease it."

"We need to do something about this," resident Stephanie Chauncey said. "We need to bring awareness to our community."

NY1 has reached out to the Ravenswood Generating Station for comment on what plans they have to switch fuels.
