NEW YORK - Mayor Bill de Blasio once told NY1 that getting around by helicopter wasn't his thing, but he's reportedly been using police choppers a lot more lately.

According to published reports, NYPD logs show the mayor has taken helicopter trips around the city 10 times since September.

Before September, he had only taken eight chopper trips since taking office in 2014.

The New York Times says many of the mayor's recent trips have been to meet police officers and firefighters injured in the line of duty, or attend the funerals of those who were killed.

A spokesman for the mayor insists that his use of helicopters is still very rare.

The mayor addressed criticism of the issue in the debut of NY1's "Mondays with the Mayor" segment in October.

He said the NYPD decides whether security issues and logistics dictate the use of helicopters.
