MIAMI - The first woman to serve as U.S. Attorney General, Janet Reno, has died.

One of the most recognizable figures in the Bill Clinton administration, Reno was at the center of several controversial events in the '90s and early 2000s.

That includes the deadly federal raid on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas, as well as the armed seizure and return of 5-year-old Elian Gonzalez to Cuba.

Reno also ran for governor of Florida in 2002, but was unsuccessful.

Her family says she had suffered complications from Parkinson's disease.

Janet Reno was 78 years old.
