NEW YORK - Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday again promoted pedestrian safety with his Vision Zero Dusk and Darkness initiative.

It's an effort to discourage reckless driving, especially now that it is getting darker earlier.

The mayor praised the latest initiative's results since its launch only a month ago.

The mayor says traffic deaths in the city have seen a sharp 50 percent drop since October, in comparison to the last five years.

"The initial results are amazing. What's happened in just two over years is unbelievable numerically and again you've seen what this latest initiative was able to achieve in the last month. So I think it is right to set a very high goal. As I've said, we've only just gotten started," De Blasio said.

The mayor says officers are giving out more summons - especially between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. - for risky driving violations.

The mayor is urging drivers to look where they're going and to slow down.
