NEW YORK - The city on Tuesday announced it has reached a new milestone in its fight against HIV.

According to the City Health Department, the number of new HIV diagnoses dropped to some of it's lowest levels in 35 years.

In 2015 there were a little over 2,400 new cases.

That's an 8.3 percent drop from 2014.

Health Commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett credits the low numbers to city and state programs that offered free anti-viral drugs as well as the push to get New Yorkers tested.

Last year also marked the first year since the city began tracking cases that an infant was not diagnosed with the virus.
