Describing a climate of worldwide fear and mistrust, Dictionary.com has chosen "xenophobia" as its word of the year for 2016.
Xenophobia is defined by the website as "fear or hatred of foreigners, people from different cultures, or strangers."
It says events like the Brexit vote, the Syrian refugee crisis, the U.S. presidential race and police violence against people of color inspired the pick, along with high numbers of people looking the word up.
