The NYPD says crime is on the decline.

At its monthly stats meeting, the department said there are about 3,000 fewer major crimes in the city so far this year compared to the same time last year. That includes about a 10 percent drop in shootings and a nearly 6 percent decrease in murders.

Mayor Bill de Blasio says it's an encouraging sign, but there is more work to do.

"We talk about the fact that one crime is one crime too many. We're not going to stop until we make this city as safe as it possibly can be, but we also have to celebrate when the good work at NYPD means people are alive, and they're walking the streets who might not have been otherwise," de Blasio said.

"It's now seven straight months of crime, index crime reduction in New York City, which is remarkable," said Dermot Shea, NYPD deputy commissioner for operations.

On the other side, police say robberies of senior citizens and rapes are both higher for the year.
